Now or Never embodies the urgency of the present moment in both political and personal terms. Two monumental billboards stand face-to-face across a narrow passageway—one demanding, the other refusing. From one perspective, NOW is on the right and NEVER is on the left, but when viewers walk through the constricted space between them and look back, the relationship flips.

Each sign measures 17.5 feet tall and 40 feet long, supported by steel structures reminiscent of roadside billboards. Overwhelming in scale, the signs rise far above the human body, but they are are spaced only eight feet apart. Their close proximity creates a visceral tension through both language and form, producing a charged space that mirrors today’s polarized political climate. Yet by inviting people to move physically between the signs, the installation underscores the possibility of finding a common middle ground.

From afar, NOW and NEVER appear as stark black-on-white and white-on-black. But up close, viewers discover that each word is formed through an offset dot matrix pattern inspired by lithographic printing. Tiny flecks of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black overlap to create the illusion of solid tones, revealing that even what seems “black and white” contains hidden layers of complexity.

Painted grey lines radiate outward from the passageway between the billboards, directing visitors toward the center. These lines condense into a grey walkway that functions as both a literal path and symbolic middle ground. The pattern painted on the ground recalls the shape of an hourglass, suggesting the passage of time. As individuals traverse the space, their movement echoes grains of sand falling through an hourglass, embodying the fleeting nature of the present moment.

The billboards are rotated twenty two degrees north of true east and positioned so that the sun will rise directly within the narrow gap between NOW and NEVER on the summer solstice. People will be invited to visit the sculpture to witness this celestial alignment, which reinforces the work’s meditation on time and ties the human experience to the larger rhythms of the

natural world.

The phrase “now or never” is intended to resonate on multiple levels. Collectively, it speaks to global challenges such as climate change, where hesitation means opportunity lost. Individually, it reminds us that every moment is a turning point—an opportunity to choose one’s future and to live deliberately from this moment forward.
