Stele commemorates Kelly Wenising, who served as president of her Neighborhood Association until her death in 2021. Her impact on the community was so great that the community decided to memorialize her within this piece.
The sculpture takes the form of a stele — historically, an upright stone or wooden slab used as a monument. Here, the figure represents a person holding the community above themselves, reflecting how Kelly lived her life.
Kelly was deeply involved in local theatre, comedy, and the culinary arts. In her honor, a scholarship at Ivy Tech now supports up-and-coming culinary students. Though she never sought the spotlight herself, the community remains deeply grateful for everything she gave and Stele is the spotlight everyone feels she deserves.
